Annual Summer Tour
The OOHC 8th Annual Summer Tour
May 30th, 2025
at Pratum Farm near Salem, OR.
The Summer Tour is coming early this year — and we’re excited to kick things off in full bloom!
Join us on May 30th at Pratum Farm, just outside of Salem, where Bruce and Paula Kaser will welcome us to their beautiful 55-acre orchard. With organic and transitioning hazelnuts—including Jefferson, Lewis, and Dorris varieties—this farm offers the perfect setting to explore cover crops at their peak.
From field insights to expert talks, it’s going to be a full day of learning, connecting, and walking the rows.
Sponsored by the Northwest Transition to Organic Partnership Program
In the morning, we’ll hear from a fantastic lineup of speakers:
OSU scientists will share insights on the benefits of cover crops for soil health.
Cascade Foods will provide a market update.
The always-popular Growers Panel returns, featuring Joseph Evers (Our Nut Farm), Ben Larson (My Brothers Farm), and Dennis Carlson (Nature Farms).
The Oregon Organic Hazelnut Collective is also honored to welcome representatives from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley’s team for a crucial discussion on the evolving political landscape and its impact on Oregon’s hazelnut industry.
Field Representative Gustavo Guerrero and Policy Advisor Hanna Sweet will provide insights into the latest legislative developments, offering valuable perspectives on policies shaping the future of hazelnut growers, processors, and stakeholders.
Featured Speaker Highlight:
We’re thrilled to welcome Gary R. Smith, a pioneer in regenerative agriculture from California’s pistachio industry. Gary manages over 3,000 acres in Central California and will share his candid experiences adapting to a rapidly changing, sustainability-driven food market.
Also presenting:
Judy Hirigoyen, OOHC’s marketing consultant, will unveil the Council’s new brand identity and communications program. With over 25 years of experience in commodity marketing, nutrition research, and government relations, including 12 years as VP of Global Marketing for American Pistachio Growers, Judy will provide valuable insights into tree nut branding strategies.
Afternoon Field Tour:
At Pratum Farm, see cover crops in action and in bloom. Bruce and Paula Kaser will showcase their 55 acres of organic and transitioning hazelnuts, planted between 2011 and 2020. Tour the orchard, view equipment, learn about multi-stem trees, and ask questions!
This is a free event, thanks to funding from the Northwest Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). Morning beverages and pastries, plus a fantastic lunch, are included.
Don’t miss this valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and grow with fellow growers, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders.

Thanks for Attending!
The OOHC Annual Summer Farm Tour was another great success! This past August, David Stehman and Maryclair Stehman Birkemeier hosted around 90 participants at Meridian Orchards in Aurora, creating a fantastic space for organic hazelnut growers to connect and share insights.
The day featured a walking tour of the orchards, discussions on regenerative farming, and expert presentations on tree health, cover crops, and organic pest management. A grower panel wrapped up the event, highlighting real-world experiences and innovative solutions. Thanks to the Northwest Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), we were able to host this event at no cost!
